Melamine foam is a foam made of melamine resin that is flexible and has a porosity of 99% or more. The material is a three-dimensional network structure, with light weight, sound-absorbing, flame-retardant, heat insulation, stability, environmental protection, good low temperature flexibility, good air permeability, strong wear resistance, wide temperature range (normal working temperature: -180-200 °C; short-term resistance to 240 °C high temperature without deformation) and other advantages, widely used in shipbuilding.
The melamine foam has a three-dimensional grid structure system, and has a very high open rate (up to 99% of the melamine foam density of 10kg/m3). The sonic wave can be easily and effectively entered the deep layer of the foam and transformed into a grid. The vibration is consumed and absorbed, and the reflected wave can be effectively eliminated. The sound absorption performance is excellent in a wide range of audio frequencies, and particularly, it has prominent absorption characteristics for low-frequency noise. The test showed that the thickness reached 8cm thick and the sound absorption coefficient of 315Hz frequency reached 0.85.
The melamine foam has excellent flame retardancy in itself without adding any flame retardant. Flame retardancy shows the following three characteristics:
★ Rapid carbonization: The surface immediately contacted with the open flame is carbonized, and no drip occurs. Immediately after separation, a large amount of inert gas—nitrogen—is isolated, thereby blocking oxygen and slowing down the reaction speed.

★ Low smoke density: According to the test, the smoke density grade of this product is less than 15, which is much lower than the common foam material of the same kind. For example, the density class of flame-retardant polyurethane foam smoke is less than 75 (national standards).
Melamine foam can reach:
★ B1 low flammable material standard stipulated by German DIN4102;
★ American Insurance Association UL94-V0 high flame retardant material standards;
★ Through the European Union BS 6853, NF F16-101, DIN5510 fire certification.
★ China’s national standard GB/T8624-2006 Class B flame retardant standards.
The three-dimensional mesh structure of melamine foam makes the convection heat transfer of air effectively prevented, so that this product has excellent thermal insulation effect. At the same time, the good thermal stability of this product also provides protection for thermal insulation.
Melamine foam is a thermosetting plastic with a high degree of three-dimensional network cross-linked structure system, and has higher thermal stability and aging resistance than conventional polyethylene, polystyrene, and low cross-linked polyurethane foam materials. Long-term stability in the temperature range between -180 °C to 200 °C, can withstand short-term high temperature of 240 °C.
The melamine foam has a bulk density of only 4-12 kg/m3, which is the lightest among currently available foams. This brings opportunities for energy-saving and environmental-friendly applications, especially in places that require the use of lightweight, safe materials.
